Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is officially out after Trump fired him via a tweet. Trump replaced Tillerson with current CIA chief Mike Pompeo. Trump wrote, “Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State.”
He continued, “He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!”
After news broke that Trump had fired Tillerson, Under Secretary of State Steve Goldstein released a statement that contradicted the White House. The White House responded by firing Goldstein.

In his statement, Goldstein informed the public that Tillerson hadn’t spoken with Trump ahead of his firing, and Tillerson was “unaware” of the reason he was fired.
Goldstein later added that Tillerson had “every intention of staying” in his post before Trump pulled the trigger. According to the White House, Chief of Staff John Kelly informed Tillerson on Friday about his impending dismissal.
Trump’s feud with Tillerson began last year after the release of the “moron” report, in which Tillerson allegedly called the president a “moron.” More recently, Tillerson started to speak out against continued Russian interference in U.S. elections.
