Senator John McCain came forth this Tuesday to speak out against President Trump’s recent decision to nominate Gina Haspel to become the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), suggesting that she was involved in “one of darkest chapters in American history.”
While he placed his confidence in CIA Director Mike Pompeo’s ability to serve as secretary of State, an appointment Trump declared earlier Tuesday, McCain said in a statement that Haspel needs to be reprimanded for her stance on torture.
“The torture of detainees in U.S. custody during the last decade was one of the darkest chapters in American history,” McCain said. “Ms. Haspel needs to explain the nature and extent of her involvement in the CIA’s interrogation program during the confirmation process.”
Following the aftermath of September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Bush administration “squandered precious moral authority” to get intelligence, McCain said.
President Trump in a shocking move dismissed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and replaced him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo in an action that had Washington scrambling.
“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State,” Trump wrote after reports of the news first broke.
“He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!”
The news was first confirmed by The Washington Post.
Tillerson and Trump have had a strained relationship, so it comes as no surprise that Tillerson would be removed.
However, the timing of Tillerson’s dismissal remains a shock given the high level diplomatic work currently at hand.
Trump this Thursday stunned the world by graciously accepting an invitation to meet in person with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, marking him the first U.S. president to ever meet with a North Korea leader.
Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!
